Integrated Urban Mobility

Integrated Urban Mobility is defined by the Canadian Urban Transportation Association (CUTA) as “the ability for people to move easily from place to place according to their own needs.” Integrated Urban Mobility “starts with public transport service connected to all modes of transport including walking, cycling, auto and alternatives to transportation; enables door-to-door and seamless mobility throughout an urban area and is designed for all segments of population.”

CUTA retained Dillon to create an Integrated Mobility Implementation Toolbox that provides practices that can be implemented by transit systems or municipalities looking to shift towards integrated mobility depending on their individual needs.

The Toolbox highlights several examples of current integrated mobility solutions throughout North America and Europe, determines key challenges and lessons learned from these examples, and in doing so outlines potential courses of actions for transit agencies to work towards achieving integrated mobility.

Three themes are highlighted in the toolbox:

  • Design for movement
  • Demand management
  • Mobility management

Each theme is described. Example initiatives and programs are presented for different strategies to demonstrate how municipalities are currently working towards integrated mobility.
