Albert McCormick Community Centre Central Plaza – Waterloo, ON

Dillon developed an overall master plan for the Albert McCormick Community Centre. Phase 1 of the master plan included a skate park, splash pad, parkour climbing feature, public art, parking lot expansion and enhanced paving, lighting and landscaping amenities.

Once the master plan was approved, Dillon continued their collaboration with the City to develop detailed design drawings, written specifications and provide contract administration and observation services on behalf of the City. The park was officially opened on July 16, 2021.

Stakeholder Engagement

Through the early conceptual design phase and skatepark design, a design workshop was held with city staff. The workshop highlighted further opportunities to integrate the skate park component while resolving overall site plan issues associated with the AMCC site. The workshop generated a series of sketch options that addressed overall circulation, arrival, parking, building entry locations, and a plaza space in support of the skatepark. Concept sketches from the workshop provided a foundational approach to the design development of the park.

During the detailed design phase of the project, Albert McCormick’s community park designs were shown to the public through the City’s “Engage Waterloo” online platform as part of the larger Neighbourhood Action Sports Venues project to implement three additional skate parks across Waterloo.
