The City of Hamilton and Dillon Consulting Limited were recognized by the Hamilton/Halton Engineering Week Committee with a 2017 Project of the Year Award, in the Waterfront Redevelopment category for the Pier 7 Boardwalk and Transient Docks at the Hamilton West Harbour in Ontario.
The improvements to the shoreline are the first phase of the redevelopment of the West Harbour waterfront. The fully-accessible wood composite boardwalk provides visitors with an uninterrupted lakeside experience from one end of the development to the other. The 150-metre-long boardwalk includes 12 floating docks for transient boaters as well as benches and lounge chairs for public use. The project work included streetscape and pedestrian scale lighting as part of the overall design. Sculptural garden elements, irrigation and accent lighting are integrated into landscape planters that shape the landside edge.
Dillon prepared an overall concept and functional plan for the waterfront’s recreational component as established in the City of Hamilton’s “Setting Sail” Waterfront Master Plan. The plan focused on designing improvements to the public edge of the existing piers and the outdated transient dock system. Our team prepared the detailed design and construction documents for the development of the shoreline to accommodate a range of active and passive activities. The key components described above will connect with the West Harbourfront Trail and the new floating dock system will provide access to visiting boaters and the popular Hamiltonian Tour Boat.
