National Indigenous History Month

In Canada, June marks National Indigenous History Month. Created in 2009 after a unanimous vote in the House of Commons, National Indigenous History Month celebrates the history, diversity and strength of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

"Indigenous Peoples Day provides an essential day to celebrate and honour the strength and resilience in our Indigenous people. It provides a day to both share and learn about our Indigenous cultures: an opportunity to transfer knowledge within our people and also for non-Indigenous people to learn and share in the celebration." - Braydi Rice, Vancouver

“National Indigneous History Month is a great opportunity to explore Métis, First Nation, and Inuit culture and learn about their history which supports and encourages reconciliation. For me, this month and National Indigenous Peoples Day gives me the chance to share my culture and heritage with my friends, colleagues, and co-workers!” - Clayton Coppaway, Saint John

"This month fosters a spirit of celebration for Indigenous culture and the diversity within our culture. In addition, it is a time to be thankful for the ones who came before us and the deep roots we have in this country and this land." - Katrine Levesque, Winnipeg
