Stacie Kalyn and Jacqueline Huard at the APB Conference and AGM

Stacie Kalyn and Jacqueline Huard will co-present at the Association of Professional Biology (APB) 40th Annual Professional Biology Conference and Annual General Meeting held May 9-11, 2019 in Kamloops, British Columbia. They will present “Balancing Species at Risk Conservation and the Needs of a First Nation” alongside Tzeachten First Nation on Friday, May 10th, 2019. Oregon ForestsnailThe presentation is a case study looking at a project that’s spanned nearly 10 years where there’s a need to develop critically needed community member housing while balancing the conservation needs of Oregon forestsnail, a Schedule 1 species at risk.  The presentation will focus on some of the real-life challenges of applying the Species at Risk Act (working within Critical Habitat) in an urban environment on First Nations lands where the competing interests of habitat protection and development collide.

Stacie is a biologist and associate with over 15 years of experience specializing in the fields of fisheries ecology, wildlife management and species at risk conservation. She has also worked with numerous Indigenous communities in western and northern Canada to provide environmental management and land use planning support, species at risk management, regulatory agency liaison, and collaborating to develop Traditional Ecological Knowledge / Traditional Land Use studies. She is also the office manager of Dillon’s Vancouver office.

Jacqueline is a wildlife biologist and has been learning and working in the environmental field since 2007. As a generalist of southern British Columbia fish and wildlife, she has had the opportunity to work in a multi-species and multi-disciplined environments and has experienced the Species at Risk Act through multiple projects and lenses. Jacqueline is passionate about sustainable development and the applications of using science-based decision making to inform policy and management directives.
