2014 RPIC Federal Contaminated Sites National Workshop Material featured in CLU-IN Technology Innovation News Survey

Dr. Indra Kalinovich’s work on barrier systems in the Canadian Arctic with Queen's University was presented at the 2014 RPIC Federal Contaminated Sites National Workshop and recently featured in the USEPA’s Contaminated Sites Clean Up Technical Innovation News Survey.

The presentation, “Mitigation of PCB Using Permeable Reactive Barrier Technology at Resolution Island, Nunavut from 2005 to 2013” described permeable reactive barriers’ (PRB) construction, monitoring results, successful capture of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-contaminated sediment, geotextile stability and plans for decommissioning of the PRBs. The barriers were designed and installed in 2005 and their performance in the harsh northern climate was closely monitored. Indra is a hydrogeochemist and environmental engineer-in-training specializing in environmental site assessments, site remediation and environmental fate and transport modelling. In addition to her role at Dillon, she is an adjunct professor with the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Manitoba. Indra has over eight years of experience in the environmental field. Prior to joining Dillon, Indra was a postdoctoral hydrogeochemist at the State University of New York, University at Buffalo, where she investigated physical and geochemical heterogeneity impacts on organic contaminant fate and transport in the Borden Aquifer at CFB Borden, Ontario.
