Research and Development of a Reference Guidance Document for the Northern American Airport Industry

National Academy of Science's (NAS) Transportation Research Board's (TRB) Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) awarded Dillon with the contract to research and develop a reference guidance document for the North American airport industry with regard to the use and potential impacts of aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at airports.

The research will help airports establish best management practices for their day-to-day operations associated with AFFF procurement, storage, use, preparation, removal, and disposal; enable airport managers to identify potential issues or areas of concern associated with PFAS; and understand the state of the practice regarding sampling, laboratory analysis, and remediation.  Andrew Thalheimer will serve as the principal investigator for this work.  Our team will include Dr.Indra Kalinovich, Rob Willis, and Jon Spalding with support from Mead and Hunt Inc., J.D. Franz Research, and Dr. Charles Wong of the University of Winnipeg.
